Come and dive in high-altitude, freshwater, volcanic Lake Atitlán, described by Aldous Huxley as “the most beautiful lake in the world”. Located in the highlands 5160ft above sea level and surrounded by three volcanoes, Atitlán’s beauty doesn’t stop on the surface. Ati Divers, in the beautiful north-shore village of Santa Cruz has been exploring this mysterious underwater world since 1996.
Divers should not miss the opportunity to dive in this geothermically active, high altitude temperate environment. There are few places in the world where you can dive at altitude in a wetsuit. Plunge your hands into volcanic “hot spots” to feel the heat from the magma. Search for ancient mayan pottery, swim next to gigantic rock formations, volcanic swim throughs, and see the freshwater crabs and fish such as bass, crappie, and cichlids that live amongst the plant life. Stare down into the abyss, over 1000ft below, in this 87,000 year old lake.
Located within the hotel La Iguana Perdida, Ati Divers offer dives and courses for all ability levels. Learn to dive, take the altitude speciality, or even become a Divemaster with our internship program to continue your diving adventures around Central and South America.
